The general takeaway from the majority of wheelchair users was that Barcelona is a fairly easy city to visit and the users didn’t miss out on the majority of sights the city has to offer. Anyone who’s been to the Catalan Capital knows that Barcelona is slightly on a gradient – flanked by Montjüic mountain to the left, Tibidabo at the back, and the Mediterranean sea at the bottom. It’s a haven for skateboarders for example, and the many bike lanes and success of the city’s Bicing venture, means that getting around on two wheels is not that much of a headache. I also had the help of two friends visiting me who use wheelchairs in writing this article!

Public transport is a huge influence on any persons visit to a new destination, especially a city – none more so than those with a wheelchair. Well, visitors will be extremely happy to see the newly installed elevators on the metro at Liceu on Las Ramblas as well as the Purple Line (Line 2) being the only line at the moment with elevators from street level to the platforms. On the occasions where there was not a elevator, the accompanying people were able to help up escalators or steps – although my friends mentioned that staff also seemed keen to help on one occasion. One group also used the buses in town, and although they had to wait for the next bus, when it arrived it had lowered suspension and was perfect for the wheelchair user to board.

Obviously, some of the bigger attractions were a gamble in not knowing if things would work, but as one family were travelling with children, they wanted to make the most of the trip, so opted for the Cable Cars up on Montjüic. The good news is that the Funicular at Parallel metro station is perfectly adaptable for those in a wheelchair. Be sure to board the very end carriage down in Parallel – this means at the top you will only have one step to access the elevator.

Another bonus was that the Montjüic Cable Car was also wheelchair accessible, after the newly constructed boxes are now wider, with a capacity of 8 people. The same cabins offer a special dinner inside the cable car during summer, so the temporary table they use to install gives a similar width. Unfortunately the cable car which crosses the Mediterranean sea from Barceloneta’s beach to the Miramar at Montjüic is off limits. Whilst there is an elevator at Barceloneta end, there are around 13 steep steps at the opposite end, ruling this out.

Barcelona’s beaches are easily accessible for those in a wheelchair, with ramps along the Olympic Village beaches and the wooden boardwalks often reaching right down to the shore and Barceloneta again having a very slight gradient down to the beach area – both very pleasing, especially given the heat in summer!

One of my friends wanted to visit the Camp Nou for a football game and despite furious Googling and contact through various re-selling websites, no-one was able to find wheelchair accessible tickets. Two of our ventured trekkers made their way up to the stadium and were told that there WERE tickets available for wheelchair access, but decided against going to the match due to the late kick off that particular day and the possible nightmare of getting home afterwards. This to me was a shame, as it’s a great stadium to visit, and had tickets been booked in advance, a more strategic plan could have been organised with perhaps a taxi pick up after the game to avoid the crowds, etc. I think there should be easier information available on the website (there was a telephone number, but only Spanish-speaking operators).

One improvement that could be suggested to the local council concerns the UNESCO World Heritage site of Park Güell. On my recommendation, one group took a taxi up to Gaudi’s magnificent Park Güell, and whilst they were able to visit the walkways and paths in and around the entrance to the park, there was no direct way to access the main plaça with the tiled benches. This is a highlight of the Park offering fantastic panoramic views of the sprawling city below, and should definitely be something to consider in the future.

This leads to, among other things, unnecessary wear and tear on chairs and people and largely preventable theft. Both of these have increased hospitals costs and there has yet to be an era where that is a good thing.
For people who do not work in the medical fields, the concept of wheelchair theft may be unfamiliar. However, stop to consider that they have wheels and are designed to be propelled by the occupant, as well as not being easily secured – except in a locked room.
Hospital personnel often have more pressing concerns, such as saving a patient, than getting a chair locked up in a basement storage room. Combine this with the aforementioned ability to be folded up and put in a car, and wheelchair theft is a very costly concern for all manner of care facilities.
Further, a great many of the uses of medical wheelchairs are not by those who have mobility issues. Rather policy, safety concerns, or temporary impairment requires that institutional personnel transfer the client from one locale to another. This obviates the need for a chair to be propelled by its occupant. Eliminating that ability makes the chair less open to theft as well giving attendants heightened ability to deal with obstreperous patients.
When the need for independent propulsion is removed, a completely new world opens up. The handle used to steer the chair can be repositioned so that the attendant can get the most movement with the least strain.
The same goes for raising arms and elevatable footrests, designed for easy transfer and positioning. The addition of automatically locking brakes is a feature that most standard wheelchairs could stand to incorporate into their own designs.

How To Find The Strongest and Lightest Wheelchair Ramps

There are many types of wheelchair ramps available… including temporary and permanent ones. There are ones made of wood and ones made of steel or aluminum. In this article, we’re going to talk about a different kind of ramp…a ramp that is completely portable.

So many mobility products are made to be ultra-portable. Wheelchairs and scooters can be quickly and easily disassembled and will fit into the trunk of a car. Or there are the highly convenient hitch attachments that allow scooter users to lift their scooter off the ground and drive around with it nearby, fully assembled and ready for their convenience. Unfortunately, ramps have not followed suit as closely as other mobility products. Ramps tend to be large, heavy, unwieldy, and often permanent. There are two reasons for this:

1. The slope of the ramp needs to be a certain ratio of the height…which means the higher the step you want to ascend, the longer your ramp needs to be. This can increase the weight of the ramp dramatically and longer ramps are, of course, less portable.

2. The material of a ramp needs to withstand a fair amount of weight. While the materials that make up a wheel chair are fairly light weight, when you combine them together with the user, a battery and motor (in the case of an electric wheelchair), or a second person to push the wheelchair up the ramp… that can be a lot of weight. Many wheelchair ramps have to be rated for a MINIMUM of a 500 pounds and many try to build beyond the minimum!

So, between the size of the ramp and the material necessary to hold the weight, a ramp is not easily portable. But slowly, efforts are being made to improve the portability of wheelchair ramps so that they can carried with the wheelchair user. There are a few kinds:

…A suitcase ramp is the most well known. When it folds up, it is about the size of a suitcase but when it is unfolded, it allows a rise of about 1 – 2 steps (depending on the manufacturer). Unfortunately, they are still fairly large, weighing about 41 pounds. They might be found to be more portable in a scooter rather than in a wheelchair.

…A rolling ramp. These are unusual looking ramps. They are fairly light in weight and they roll in one direction. When you want to use them, you unroll them on a flat surface and flip them over and the ramp is very strong. These ramps are often stronger than the suitcase ramp, but they can also be more expensive. As well, they are very portable but again are probably more portable on a scooter than on a wheelchair.

…A home made ramp. Home made ramps are not always recommended because they don’t have a weighted and tested strength, they are often just made of wood, and they can be put on slopes that are not advisable. Still, many wheelchair users use them because they are very slim to carry around, fairly lightweight, and easy to use.

Tips and Tricks To Get To Know Your Electric Wheelchair

First time electric wheelchair users are still getting to know their chairs and how they operate. If you own an electric wheelchair and you’re wondering how you’ll do with it, use this article as a guide to help. It gives practical advice, gleaned from those who have used electric wheelchairs to make sure your experience is the best it can be.

Make sure you have reflector tape on all 4 sides of your wheelchair. While you will probably be on the sidewalks – and usually just during the day – it’s good to have just in case. The reflector tape will still show up brightly during the day and if you find yourself delayed at night, you have nothing to worry about.

If you live in an area where you don’t have very good sidewalks and you are forced to travel on the road, stay to the side, abide by traffic laws, and get yourself a bright orange flag that you can attach to your chair. This will help you be seen not only by the car behind you but by the car behind them! That’s very important.

Find out what the distance is for your electric wheelchair’s batteries. Subtract 10% – 20% of the total distance. With this new distance, divide that amount in half. Then get a map and draw a circle around your home extending out the distance of that last number (which should be 40% to 45% of your battery’s total driving distance). This will give you the maximum range you want to go on a trip in order to get out (to do your shopping or pay bills, etc.) and to get back. And there’s a little extra capacity built in, just in case. Bring your map with you at first. While you may be familiar with the streets in your car, it can be a different story in your wheelchair…and if it’s getting late and you’re worried about the battery capacity, a map might help you find a shortcut through a park or schoolyard.

When you are not using your electric wheelchair, be sure to recharge the battery. Nothing is more frustrating than wanting to go out and not having the battery charge to go. As an alternative, buy two batteries when you get your wheelchair and always keep one on the charger and the other on your chair.

Get a poncho and carry it with you always. It can be frustrating to be caught in a downpour and a poncho will help keep you and the components on your wheelchair dry.

Something else you will want to do BEFORE you venture very far in your wheelchair is to get used to the clearance of your wheelchair. Because the batteries and motors are sometimes lower to the ground than we are used to, it can be easy to get caught up on a rock or a curb that we were once able to get over in a manually powered chair but are not longer able to get over now. As well, a stick (like a cane or a hefty walking stick) can give your chair a little extra “oomph” if you do find yourself hung up.

OK, so, sometimes I like to make dolls of my roleplay characters, just as something to do in my spare time. One of my favorite characters in one of my favorite roleplays that I am currently in is in a wheelchair and is an extremely integral part of the roleplay. I wanted to make a doll of her but I can’t seem to find a doll maker online (just the little doll sites, not a real doll) that has wheelchairs in it. It kind of makes me sad, especially because one of my best friends is in a wheelchair and she wanted a doll of herself as well.
