Some people may think that mobility scooters are just for people who are registered disabled; this is not the case though. The whole point behind them is to help people to get around, the majority of users will be disabled in a long term or permanent fashion but some will only need them for a short period of time. They can also be used for the elderly who struggle to get around without help, this options gives them a little more dignity and independence.

A couple of examples for you are as follows; a person has had to have major surgery and is currently struggling to walk any distance. This could be from replacement knees to a back operation, in these cases the person will be able to walk unaided again but in the short term they require some help.

The second could be a woman that has recently given birth and due to complications or such likes has had to stitches and this makes the process of walking very painful. Again the issue will resolve itself shortly but for the interim time some help may be needed.

These mobility scooters are all powered by electricity and require their batteries to be re-charged from time to time. The average lifespan of these 12v batteries is anywhere from two to four years with a standard number of minimum re-charges per battery.

In general the top speed is between 5 and 10 miles per hour, with the recommend speed of 3 to 4 mph for general usage. There are a number of different styles from one that have three wheels to ones that have four and have a canopy cover for when the weather turns dull and grey, which can be often in the UK.

Some of them are more basic than others with only a simple seat and little storage, while others have more comfortable seats and ample storage facilities. These are by no means and cheap purchase and for a brand new one you will be looking at a minimum of at least one thousand pounds.

Check local free ads to see if anyone is selling a second hand scooter. These will probably need some work, maybe a new seat covering or a new battery but it will not cost as much as buying a brand new one.

If your need for one of these mobility scooters is limited it may be worth looking into other options rather than buying one. There are a number of cites on-line that can arrange a scooter for hire, this may work out to be much more cost effective and any issues with the unit will be dealt with by the issuing company.

You may not feel you need a scooter all the time, it may only be useful for when you wish to visit your local shopping, town or city centre. In cases such as these most towns and cities in their UK have a Shop Mobility store close to the centres amenities. Here you can register and take out a scooter of your chose for the day and return it when you are done.

Many people would love to be out and about more and remain active, but can no longer remain standing or walking as long as they used to. Many of these are very lightweight and portable, so that you can quickly and easily fold them up and fit them in the trunk of your car. As mentioned earlier there are many different types of wheelchairs to choose from. Here are a few things to consider when picking out the right wheelchair for you.

Self-propelled Wheelchairs
Manual or self-propelled wheelchairs usually have large rear wheels and are set in motion and propelled by the person sitting in the wheelchair. Since these chairs are propelled by the occupant they have large rear wheels so that you can easily reach these while sitting in the chair. Wheel sizes normally range from 20-26 inches in diameter, but the most common sizes are normally 22 or 24 inches. The rear tires have circular hand rims that the user pushes in order to move the wheelchair forward or backwards. Many of these chairs are very lightweight and can be easily folded up and fit in the trunk of your car. Someone who is a skilled user can easily control the speed and direction of their wheelchair with very little effort. Consider buying a pair of wheelchair gloves to protect your hands if you are using this type of wheelchair.

Motorized Wheelchairs
If you are willing to pay more, and want the independence of being able to cover a little more territory by motoring around, a motorized wheelchair may be just what you need. Lightweight, portable models are widely available, and many of these chairs can be quickly assembled or disassembled and stowed in the trunk of your car. These are great for someone who is able to walk quite well, but maybe doesn’t have the endurance that they once had. Again, once at your final destination or at the mall, you can quickly assemble your wheelchair and off you go. For someone a bit more active and who loves the outdoors, they even make heavy duty motorized wheelchairs. These chairs normally have larger motors and special frames that compensate for rougher surfaces and inclines. They also have larger wheels, suspensions and drive options that provide a reasonably smooth ride even over rough surfaces. Of course these types of chairs are a bit more pricey, but if you love the outdoors and the freedom that these chairs provide, then it can be well worth it.

These are just a few types of wheelchairs to consider, but hopefully this article gives you a small glimpse at the wide range of options that are now available. With all these options, there is no reason to be stuck at home and miss out on many of the activities that you enjoy.
