A Little About Electric Wheelchairs

Perhaps the greatest scientific contribution that Canada has made to the entire world is that of the electric wheelchair. Developed by Dr. George Johann Klein in the 1950s, this has been considered as a wonder invention in the field.

There are plenty of advanced wheelchairs available in the market today. But all these are the variants of this electric powered wheelchair that was discovered five decades ago. It was the second World War that had necessitated the invention. The combined effort of the National Research Council of Canada, the state’s Department of Veteran Affairs and the Canadian Paraplegic Association had resulted in the development of the electric wheelchair. Dr. Klein had consulted a lot of patients, physicians, scientists and electronic engineers before making this ingenious invention.

Until the coming of the electric wheelchair, the existing chairs catered only to the needs of paraplegic individuals. But Dr. Klein’s invention stands apart in that it can also be used by quadriplegics. The wheelchair had benefited thousands of Second World War veterans and will hence be remembered forever.

Users of electric wheelchairs do not bound within the limit of quadriplegics and paraplegics, many doctors have suggested it for patients with cardiovascular issues. One desirable feature of the wheelchair is that any one can customize it with their use. They can use it indoor and outdoors as well. Some of them can port easily.

The electric wheelchair is regulated by means of joysticks; puff/sip controls or chin controls. Besides controlling the speed, direction and such other parameters, the electric wheelchair can be made to perform the essential functional motions and movements such as tilting and stretching out which would not have been possible otherwise.

But electric wheelchairs are very expensive with the prices ranging between 1000 and 3000 dollars. Advanced models can cost up to 10,000! They may also require constant servicing. However, transporting someone on a non-powered wheelchair can be quite a task, so in cases where the person needs extra help from a motor to move along, an electric powered wheelchair is great to have.

Having a house with a beautiful winding stairs is great, yet it might not be very practical when you reach old age. The parts of a stair lift consists of a seat, pan, arm and foot rests, seat belt, movement control, and a start and stop function for moving up and down the custom fitted railing. This is clearly beneficial to those who are suffering from lumbar pains since the lift’s soft start and stop function keys provides a smooth ride up and down the stairs.

Electric stair lifts are driven by normal home electricity supply or using the battery operated power pack. It is definitely more advantageous to use home electricity to run your stair lift but if you live in an area where power outage is common, opt for the battery operated power pack version. This eliminates the possibility of getting stuck in the middle of the stairs in case of power interruption. Other factors that determine the price of the unit include its model or brand of stair lift and the shape and style of your stairs. If you are on a budget, one of the ways to save on the cost of buying one is to find a second hand or a refurbished unit. Manufacturers can be great sources of these types of units along with classified advertisements and auction sites. However, make sure that the unit you choose will allow the user to stay at home with the freedom to move up and down the stairs without assistance from anybody.

The first thing many first time wheelchair users realize once they get their new chair is that although they are very mobile locally, they want to be able to take their wheelchair everywhere they go. This requires some sort of vehicle that can safely transport them and their wheelchair. There is a lot that goes into choosing the right vehicle for you, which is discussed in the article How to Select a Wheelchair Vehicle. Once you have decided what qualities your vehicle has to have to match your needs you need to choose a manufacturer. Most people do not know this, but a number of the major car manufacturers offer amazing deals for disabled individuals that allow them to save a large amount of money on their cars, vans and trucks. TOYOTA

Toyota has a number of proven vehicles that are suitable for transporting you and your wheelchair, which include the Toyota Sienna, RAV4, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Scion xB and many more of their trucks, SUVs and sedans. The most commonly converted vehicle is the Toyota Sienna minivan, which can be modified to have a wheelchair ramp coming out of the rear hatch.

Toyota provides a cash reimbursement for up to $1000 for mobility modifications on their vehicles purchased through an authorized dealer and model year 2001 and later. Along with this cash reimbursement for modifications they will also help you with financing assuming good credit history.

GENERAL MOTORS

General Motors mobility assistance program is only eligible for new or unused 2008, 2009 or 2010 models. General Motors program allows you to get reimbursed for mobility modifications to areas such as vehicle entry, brake/accelerator systems, seats, steering system, driver position and many others.

GM will reimburse disabled individuals up to $1000 for covered mobility modifications to their new vehicles. Along with the $1000 reimbursement, they also offer an additional two years of free OnStar service for GM vehicles equipped with the service. OnStar can give an additional level of security to GM drivers as it can be used to call for assistance, find you and your vehicle, remote door unlock, automatic emergency assistance in a detected crash and roadside assistance.

FORD

Ford offers the largest reimbursement out of the major manufacturers at $1,200. As long as you purchase a new Ford vehicle and apply for your reimbursement within 12 months of your purchase date you qualify.
