Did you know people in wheelchairs compete in races? Thes races take place on roads and tracks and anyone that needs to use a wheelchair can participate The disability of each athlete is used to place them in a category so everyone has a fair chance of winning. Sepecially designed wheelchairs that can reach fast speeds are used.

The famed wheelchair race, which was started in 1960 takes place at the Summer Paraplympics. There is a huge business in wheelchairs these days and they are becoming much more affordable. Although some health insurance may assist you when buying a wheelchair but if they do not, the manual wheelchairs are still affordable for some. If you have the use of your arms and hands you can use the manually powered units even if you have to sacrifice quality for price. Wheelchairs are a wonderful invention and help a great deal in mobility.

Wheelchairs for crippled people are their feet. They can move around if they are on it. You can’t change the fact that getting a wheelchair is an absolute must whether you were born with a disability or met with an accident that left you disabled. Although a wheelchair just transports you to the place you want to visit and doesn’t really assist you in walking, it’s far better than lying in bed or a couch the whole day.

The brand new ones especially require a lot of money to buy. A second hand one that still functions well are sold in some shops and is a good practical option. If you’re looking for cheap brand new wheelchairs, try searching craigslist, ebay or internetmarket. the most important thing is it meets the user’s needs not whether it is old or new. A variety of different walkers are available for adults.

The most well known model is the straight legged walker and it has four legs connected to a handlebar. The front wheeled walker is another type. It’s just like a straight legged walker, except that it has wheels on the front legs which makes it more convenient to use. Walkers with wheels on both the front and back legs are also available, but these are quite difficult to control and the user must have more physical ability in order to use it. For adults there are many different types of walkers available.

The straight legged walker is the most recognizes and has four legs connected to a handlebar. The front wheeled walker is another kind of walker. It’s quite similar to the straight legged walker and has wheels on the legs which make it easier to use. More difficulty to control are the walkers with wheels on every leg, they require the user to have more physically ability.

Wheelchairs are used as a replacement of walking, generally by those who have walking or other physical disabilities or injuries and also those who are immobile because of a psychological disability. Those recovering from fractures can make the healing process faster and more efficient by using a wheelchair instead of crutches. Battery powered and electrical models have hit the markets and much easier to use. Manually operated ones are now even made of light materials to make moving smoother and more comfortable to use.

Both Mobility & Disability Wheelchair motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters give us the potential of being mobile and independent regardless of any physical issues. As with any kind of technology, though, these devices are only worthwhile when we buy the equipment which is appropriate for our requirements. What follows is a generalized assessment of motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters, which will partially aid you in discerning the particular sort of mobility aid to purchase.

Motorized wheelchairs will give you more back and head support and generally will be designed for you to sit in them all day. Motorized wheelchairs are equipped with a collection of capabilities that help the chairs to tilt forward and backward, and some motorized chairs can change the height of the chair to be accessible to different work surfaces. Being able to change your stance regularly might help you to work in your chair for most of the day without getting pressure sores. Motorized wheelchairs also have more tire and power base variations, which help you to stay mobile inside and outside safely. Pay close attention to Wheelchair Ramp as well.

Powered wheelchairs are normally more maneuverable in enclosed spaces, and seeing as they are controlled by an attached joystick, it is easier to control them if you don’t enjoy full use of your arms. Finally, motorized wheelchairs are made to be lifted into and attached inside wheelchair accessible buses, where the chairs will legally work as car seats. Naturally, if you don’t have a lift available, this isn’t exactly a benefit. On the other hand, if you can’t normally drive yourself, it is less of a hassle to depend on public transportation with a wheelchair as opposed to with a scooter which is required be stored separately.

Mobility scooters bring their own set of selling points, presuming you have the right set of expectations. If your upper body is intact and performing properly, and you just require this extra aid for your legs, a scooter might be ideal to fulfill your needs. Scooters are most often steered by using a tiller, which performs very similarly to a handlebar on a bike. But, don’t forget about Mobility & Disability Wheelchair and Ramp.

Travel and folding mobility scooters may be easily taken apart and placed in a regular car, so if you could step down from the scooter and drive your own vehicle, this is much more convenient than riding city buses or purchasing a full-sized van with a wheelchair lift. Scooters will generally not include the specific postural functions that motorized wheelchairs have, and the tiller linkage is much more basic than the joystick steering option. While this results in the user enjoying fewer features, it also means you are going to be saving money on a scooter seeing as it contains less technology.

One of the wonderful things with regards to being in the 21st century is having the chance to exploit the current technology. Motorized wheelchairs and mobility scooters help us to keep mobile and independent beyond the age when our lower appendages no longer cooperate. Finding the best type of technology is important, though. Identify your needs, order your priorities, then buy with confidence.

Perhaps the greatest scientific contribution that Canada has made to the entire world is that of the electric wheelchair. Developed by Dr. George Johann Klein in the 1950s, this has been considered as a wonder invention in the field.

There are plenty of advanced wheelchairs available in the market today. But all these are the variants of this electric powered wheelchair that was discovered five decades ago. It was the second World War that had necessitated the invention. The combined effort of the National Research Council of Canada, the state’s Department of Veteran Affairs and the Canadian Paraplegic Association had resulted in the development of the electric wheelchair. Dr. Klein had consulted a lot of patients, physicians, scientists and electronic engineers before making this ingenious invention.

Until the coming of the electric wheelchair, the existing chairs catered only to the needs of paraplegic individuals. But Dr. Klein’s invention stands apart in that it can also be used by quadriplegics. The wheelchair had benefited thousands of Second World War veterans and will hence be remembered forever.

Users of electric wheelchairs do not bound within the limit of quadriplegics and paraplegics, many doctors have suggested it for patients with cardiovascular issues. One desirable feature of the wheelchair is that any one can customize it with their use. They can use it indoor and outdoors as well. Some of them can port easily.

The electric wheelchair is regulated by means of joysticks; puff/sip controls or chin controls. Besides controlling the speed, direction and such other parameters, the electric wheelchair can be made to perform the essential functional motions and movements such as tilting and stretching out which would not have been possible otherwise.

But electric wheelchairs are very expensive with the prices ranging between 1000 and 3000 dollars. Advanced models can cost up to 10,000! They may also require constant servicing. However, transporting someone on a non-powered wheelchair can be quite a task, so in cases where the person needs extra help from a motor to move along, an electric powered wheelchair is great to have.

Are you shopping for a powered wheelchair? If so, head over to the electric powered wheelchairs web site. This and other unique content ” articles are available with free reprint rights.

If you own a business that serves the public, you should know that you have a legal responsibility to provide access to disabled people as far as reasonably possible. You will need to therefore adjust some of the physical features of your premises to improve access to your products and services for everyone.

But where to start with modifying your premises? The first thing to do is to find out about your responsibilities with regards to disabled access from an official or government body, or from any company which specialises in adapting buildings so that disabled access can be improved.

The first thing to think about is the physical barriers to accessing your premises, and how these can be overcome. This refers to steps, stairs, gates and doors, either at the entrances or exits of your premises or to toilet or other facilities. You can improve this on a basic level by adding handrails and wheelchair-friendly ramps alongside steps.

There is another physical barrier to be overcome as well, and this is how access between different floor levels can be improved. The best option is disabled lifts, with the most commonly used being platform lifts. The platform lift is suitable for all types of users, including wheelchair users, and it can be easily and quickly installed.

Once you have taken steps to improve physical barriers to access, you should move on to other measures. For example, you could train a staff member in British Sign Language (BSL) or add additional signage for vision-impaired customers.

All you need to do to work out what needs changing is to think about the potential needs of individuals who will use your premises. Not every single need can be catered to, but you should do your utmost to improve access for as many people as possible.

Are you hoping to find somewhere that offers Wheelchair Lift? You should take a look at the Altalift website.

There you are, 2 miles from home, in the pouring rain and your scooter crawls to a complete standstill. This is a story that many of us are familiar with and, no matter how much you may not like it, the chances are it is our fault. By not looking after our mobility scooter batteries correctly, we are just asking for trouble. It isn’t hard to reduce the likelihood of a repeat episode however.

No matter how short trip, your battery should be placed on charge on your return. Indeed, mobility scooter batteries should be kept on charge unless being used; to ensure maximum capacity at all times. Not only does this improve both performance and lifespan, but also ensures you have sufficient power to complete your trip, should there be any surprises whilst you’re out.

Of course, as with most things, there is an exception that proves this rule! If there will be a period of time that you are not going to be using your scooter, (say for a holiday or some sort), you should remove your battery from the scooter, and completely disconnect it from the charger. Whilst it is recommendable to leave a battery on charge almost constantly, this is not the case should the unit not be used for some time.

As important as correctly charging, you should ensure your scooter and battery are stored well. Obviously, having access to a shed or garage would be ideal. However, if this is not possible, do make sure both units are stored away from any heat sources or areas susceptible to damp.

Just as damaging as heat is damp. Now, fortunately this is something I have not been affected by, (fingers crossed!), but friends have assured me that simply wiping everything down at the first sign should halt any nasties in their tracks!

Following these tips should ensure your mobility scooter batteries last well, and should also help maintain the performance of the scooter itself. However, it is still advisable to have your scooter and battery thoroughly service ion a regular basis, to ensure no minor issues turn into more expensive problems.

When the need for a wheelchair vehicle presents itself, it’s hard to always be prepared for an event such as this. There are many times where it is unexpected and the finances just aren’t there. It doesn’t matter if the vehicle is for you directly or for a loved one, it can be a great necessity for achieving freedom of mobility and independence. Often, modifications can be made to an existing vehicle, but occasionally a completely new one must be purchased.

Adjustments can be made to the driver’s seat that enable an individual using a wheelchair to operate the vehicle with great efficiency. These modifications often include changing the gas and brake pedals over to levers on the steering wheel.

This makes getting around much easier. There are some vans that have ramps or lifts that allow the wheelchair to be driven directly into the van. Once inside, the chair is locked into place behind the steering wheel for direct driving access.

If cost is an issue with modifying or purchasing a wheelchair accessible vehicle, there are grants available through many nonprofit organizations. Besides grants, there is the possibility that government aid can be had.

This stands for Plan to Achieve Self Success and is for individuals who can prove that s/he is trying to make a difference in his/her quality of life. Depending on the disability and if qualifications are met, the government will aid in purchasing a new vehicle that is wheelchair accessible.

Financing through the company that the vehicle is to be purchase through often works out. Buying a slightly used accessible vehicle is also an option to consider, since getting a loan on a vehicle such as this will have lower payments. One more option would be to have a fund raiser, which works well in large communities. This could be in the form of an auction, benefit supper, or any money making endeavor that will help to go towards the purchase of a wheelchair vehicle.

Visit TGA Mobility now to view a fine selection of mobility scooters and to purchase reconditioned and hardwearing second hand mobility scooters

Getting old is a phase in life that is marked by a lot of transformations that are not really too good to feel. The body deteriorates and becomes more prone to illnesses and accidents. Our bones get brittle, out skin sags and we do not spring right back up from sickness or injury.

We can even be bound to a chair or to a bed when we get worse. Growing old may not be the prettiest picture, but it also does not need to be the hardest thing. If you have a loved one who is now confined to a wheelchair, then realize that it is your duty to make sure that everything possible is done to make his or her life as easy as it can be.

This becomes a really tough task if the relative lives by his or her lonesome. A traditional house is not really the most optimal place for a person with a disability to live in as there are various areas that are really dangerous even to its more able occupants like the bathroom or stairs.

Thankfully, technology has made it possible for us to make sure that even when we are handicapped, we can still be self sufficient. Get a chair lift for stairs installed in the home of your loved one so that they do not have to deal with tricky stairs that can be hazardous to them. Even if you can use them, stairs are still very dangerous because of their design.

Stairs are accident magnets that can really hamper the life that your elderly relative can have in his or her own house. With these nifty gadgets, you can be sure that your loved one is safe and can access all the areas of the home with ease and safety. This also means that they will need less assistance and can lead happy, active lives even by their lonesome.

So install this system and give them the gift of safety that will make growing old a bit easier. These wheelchair lifts for stairs are the perfect installation. Not only do they provide safety, but also let our handicapped loved one have a sense of independence that a lot of them look for.

A lot of elderly people hate being fussed over or inconveniencing their families. These will let them move about their own houses without having to rely on constant help, thus regaining some of the freedoms they once had. This can be the best gift.

People are involved in many activities everyday. Healthy people’s body is functioning well and is able to perform and carry on the tasks quickly and easily without any limits. They can freely move and suddenly change to any direction they want.

Those people with disability can never perform their life’s activities freely since disability can either be in the form of mental or physical illness. They need assistance in order for them to successfully finish their life’s basic needs and their disability can either be permanent or temporary.

There is no problem regarding caring for the disabled since there are many kinds of care where in it will help both the patient and the care giver to lessen the burdens on their daily routines. Some equipments, devices, medical products and supplies are recommended by doctors to help the patients in their recovery. The wheelchair is the famous device aiding patients with disability.

A powered wheelchair is powered specifically by batteries, motor or electricity and is more accessible in terms of usage compared from a manual wheelchair.

Wheelchair is considered a medical aiding device. The use of it needs a thorough evaluation on the doctor’s medical diagnosis and the patient’s ailments. Wheelchair should fit the patient’s physique and doctor’s recommendation. It is not advisable for reuse and not for resale.

These are the disadvantages of a used power wheelchair:

- The time span spent for using the power wheelchair may already affect its physical make up that may cause maintenance problems.

- It might not be compatible to the new user because of different medical diagnosis and symptoms of ailments.

- Used powered wheelchair has no guaranteed warranty because warranty is not transferable to the next user.

- The mobility of the powered wheelchair may also be affected.

- Poor physical condition due to poor maintenance of the previous users.

It is necessary that you must be able to know the specific good and bad qualities or signs before purchasing a used power wheelchair.

- You must know its physical condition especially if you are purchasing online. Careful viewing of all its corners and battery box is needed. It is not properly maintained if you observe some signs of corrosion.

There are many sports which have recently become adaptable for individuals who are confined to wheelchairs. Individuals who are quadriplegic and paraplegic can continue to participate in sports, win championships and even take home Olympic metals. Wheelchair sports have come a long way, especially in the past few years and almost all sports have become adaptable to wheelchairs. Here explained are some of the most popular wheelchair sports and some not-so-popular (but just as fun) sports which you may not have known about before reading this article.

Basketball

Basketball, perhaps the most popular wheelchair sport, was the first sport of its kind to be introduced in the 1940′s. Wheelchair basketball is a highly developed sport and is practiced both for fun and professionally on elite, competitive levels. There are wheelchair basketball leagues for men, women and children to enjoy.

Hockey

The most popular form of wheelchair hockey is called sledge hockey. Individuals are placed on a sled with skate blades and use mini sticks as opposed to the larger forms of hockey sticks. Sledge hockey allows disabled individuals to participate in and experience the wonderful game of hockey.

Rugby

Rugby is one of the more physical, fast-paced wheelchair sports and has the potential to become very intense. The rules differ quite a bit from the actual game of Rugby however the sport has been adapted quite well for disabled individuals.

Tennis

Wheelchair tennis is also one of the most popular wheelchair sports for disabled individuals to participate in. Wheelchair tennis has the same rules and regulations as normal tennis except that the ball can bounce twice as opposed to just once. This makes it easier to get to the ball. This sport can be adapted to all individuals, regardless of their form of disability.

Other Sports and Activities

There are a number of other sports that are available for individuals with disabilities. Some of the other less-popular (but just as fun) sports and activities include waterskiing, tubing, bowling, billiards and hang gliding.

Raquel Simons has done a lot of research on wheelchairs and acts as a freelance writer for thewheelchairsite.com – a site that offers information on wheelchairs, lift chairs, wheelchair lifts and more.
