A good medical wheelchair needs to have a of number features. Some are already present on standard extant models, but many others are not. A number of “extra” features should be standard on medical wheelchairs. Most manufacturers haven’t even thought about considering that they might be a really good idea.
For the purposes of this article, medical wheelchairs will be seen to be separate from those designed for individual use. There is a reason for that, which is that they should be considered and produced as diverse entities.
An individual wheelchair is just that. It is designed to provide the closest equivalent to natural mobility that a person who has been deprived of the same to due to accident, injury, or illness.
Thus, they include features designed to facilitate that very important need. The specifics vary but almost always include the ability to be folded up and put into a car for convenient travel and a height most suited to the occupant.
Outside of the need to transport individuals from location to location, medical wheelchairs have a vastly different range of needs than those for individuals. These needs have not been addressed until recently.
This leads to, among other things, unnecessary wear and tear on chairs and people and largely preventable theft. Both of these have increased hospitals costs and there has yet to be an era where that is a good thing.
For people who do not work in the medical fields, the concept of wheelchair theft may be unfamiliar. However, stop to consider that they have wheels and are designed to be propelled by the occupant, as well as not being easily secured – except in a locked room.
Hospital personnel often have more pressing concerns, such as saving a patient, than getting a chair locked up in a basement storage room. Combine this with the aforementioned ability to be folded up and put in a car, and wheelchair theft is a very costly concern for all manner of care facilities.
Further, a great many of the uses of medical wheelchairs are not by those who have mobility issues. Rather policy, safety concerns, or temporary impairment requires that institutional personnel transfer the client from one locale to another. This obviates the need for a chair to be propelled by its occupant. Eliminating that ability makes the chair less open to theft as well giving attendants heightened ability to deal with obstreperous patients.

Wheel sizes normally range from 20-26 inches in diameter, but the most common sizes are normally 22 or 24 inches. The rear tires have circular hand rims that the user pushes in order to move the wheelchair forward or backwards. Many of these chairs are very lightweight and can be easily folded up and fit in the trunk of your car. Someone who is a skilled user can easily control the speed and direction of their wheelchair with very little effort. Consider buying a pair of wheelchair gloves to protect your hands if you are using this type of wheelchair.

Motorized Wheelchairs
If you are willing to pay more, and want the independence of being able to cover a little more territory by motoring around, a motorized wheelchair may be just what you need. Lightweight, portable models are widely available, and many of these chairs can be quickly assembled or disassembled and stowed in the trunk of your car. These are great for someone who is able to walk quite well, but maybe doesn’t have the endurance that they once had. Again, once at your final destination or at the mall, you can quickly assemble your wheelchair and off you go. For someone a bit more active and who loves the outdoors, they even make heavy duty motorized wheelchairs. These chairs normally have larger motors and special frames that compensate for rougher surfaces and inclines. They also have larger wheels, suspensions and drive options that provide a reasonably smooth ride even over rough surfaces. Of course these types of chairs are a bit more pricey, but if you love the outdoors and the freedom that these chairs provide, then it can be well worth it.

These are just a few types of wheelchairs to consider, but hopefully this article gives you a small glimpse at the wide range of options that are now available. With all these options, there is no reason to be stuck at home and miss out on many of the activities that you enjoy. I am writing to those people, who are still living in 19th century.

How To Find The Strongest and Lightest Wheelchair Ramps

There are many types of wheelchair ramps available… including temporary and permanent ones. There are ones made of wood and ones made of steel or aluminum. In this article, we’re going to talk about a different kind of ramp…a ramp that is completely portable.

So many mobility products are made to be ultra-portable. Wheelchairs and scooters can be quickly and easily disassembled and will fit into the trunk of a car. Or there are the highly convenient hitch attachments that allow scooter users to lift their scooter off the ground and drive around with it nearby, fully assembled and ready for their convenience. Unfortunately, ramps have not followed suit as closely as other mobility products. Ramps tend to be large, heavy, unwieldy, and often permanent. There are two reasons for this:

1. The slope of the ramp needs to be a certain ratio of the height…which means the higher the step you want to ascend, the longer your ramp needs to be. This can increase the weight of the ramp dramatically and longer ramps are, of course, less portable.

2. The material of a ramp needs to withstand a fair amount of weight. While the materials that make up a wheel chair are fairly light weight, when you combine them together with the user, a battery and motor (in the case of an electric wheelchair), or a second person to push the wheelchair up the ramp… that can be a lot of weight. Many wheelchair ramps have to be rated for a MINIMUM of a 500 pounds and many try to build beyond the minimum!

So, between the size of the ramp and the material necessary to hold the weight, a ramp is not easily portable. But slowly, efforts are being made to improve the portability of wheelchair ramps so that they can carried with the wheelchair user. There are a few kinds:

…A suitcase ramp is the most well known. When it folds up, it is about the size of a suitcase but when it is unfolded, it allows a rise of about 1 – 2 steps (depending on the manufacturer). Unfortunately, they are still fairly large, weighing about 41 pounds. They might be found to be more portable in a scooter rather than in a wheelchair.

…A rolling ramp. These are unusual looking ramps. They are fairly light in weight and they roll in one direction. When you want to use them, you unroll them on a flat surface and flip them over and the ramp is very strong. These ramps are often stronger than the suitcase ramp, but they can also be more expensive. As well, they are very portable but again are probably more portable on a scooter than on a wheelchair.

…A home made ramp. Home made ramps are not always recommended because they don’t have a weighted and tested strength, they are often just made of wood, and they can be put on slopes that are not advisable. Still, many wheelchair users use them because they are very slim to carry around, fairly lightweight, and easy to use.
